Passion Pit Live on Jimmy Fallon

As expected, performance of "The Reeling". We expect no less Passion Pit. :)

Futurecop

Sorry about my lack of updates, it's summer, the weather is wonderful making it near impossible to stay indoors.

However come enjoy my new obsession, Futurecop! This Manchester duo is shocking the electronic scene with remixes from Crystal Castles, Van She...etc. While the two boys had little or no musical background prior to Futurecop!, they had a fascination with warping sounds inspired by 80s flicks and cartoons. Their beats are best compared to The Twelves, mingled with the 80's meet modern flair. So far they have an EP out The Unicorn and the Lost City of Alvograth which I recommend highly!

Digitalism- Pogo (Shinichi Osawa remix)

I've been listenin' this song for the past week straight! As a big fan of Shinichi Osawa's electro style, this is a must summer listen!

Deastro

Deastro (aka mister cutie Randolph Chabot Jr) is what we would call a electronic prodigy. At the wee early age of 12, Randolph began experimenting and producing electronic music from children's toys and synthesizers. So far he's taming a band called Veleciraptor, Our Brother the Megazord, and Deastro all in one juggling.
Deastro has 2 singles and 2 albums OUT NOW! His newest album, Moonlight Dagger came out June 2009. If you're into electronic lo-fi twinkles mixed with the perfect blend of accoustic rock, Deastro is the man.

Mayer Hawthorne

Okay, you know the phrase "don't judge a book by it's cover", I guess I should take that lesson to heart.

Meet artist Mayer Hawthorne (aka Andrew Mayer Cohen) straight born and raised from Michigan. Now when I stumbled upon Mayer, I took one look and went ...great it's another one Eminem wannabe. But boy was I wrong. Beyond DJing and rapping (which is his first love), he surprises his audience with his oh so smoooth tunes that screams Motown soul. So far Mayer has two debut singles out "Just Aint' Gonna Work Out/When I Said Goodbye" and "Maybe So, Maybe No/I Wish It Would Rain". But exciting, exciting, his first full length album A Strange Arrangement is set to release on September 9th this year!
Until then, listen up, I sure am.

Black Kids (Twelves Remix)

Okay, I know I've raved and raved about this before. But I simply have to post this for all the world to see! I'm in love. Click and be swooned.

Most Serene Republic

Meet my current obsession, Most Serene Republic. Courtesy of a good friend, this Canadian sextet is the perfect soundtrack for a lazy summer drive or simply a inner zen moment. While this band is fairly new, they've already produced two solid albums and two EPs to date. For 2009 a new album and a EP is scheduled. The EP "Digital Population" hit shelves April 28th, and the third album "...And the Ever Expanding Universe" July 14th.

Personally, the Most Serene Republic sounds like a perfect blend between The Scene Aesthetic and the strong melodic tunes of Minus the Bear. In other words, just listen and be mesmerized.

Check out Old Forever Things off their third album:

Michael Jackson

August 29 1958-June 25 2009

Regardless of events in his life, it cannot be ignored MJ has and continues to profoundly changed the music industry and the world. We will miss you King of Pop.

Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton

Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton is a solo side project of Emily Haine (aka musical artist of Metric and Broken Social Scene). Though Emily is typically known for her musical contributions in Metric, don't think for one moment that she's a one trick pony.

Emily Haine and the Soft Skeleton is best defined as musically simple, with strong piano and bright vocal textures. This mellowness seen in Soft Skeleton shines a soft vulnerability often negated from her Metric counterpart. In other words, Emily is far beyond a one trick pony.

So far, Emily is focusing on Metric, but has produced two albums under Soft Skeleton, Cut in Half and Also Double (1996), Knives Don't Have Your Back (2006), and a EP What is Free to a Good Home? (2007). Regardless, Soft Skeleton is definitely worth a listen to!

As Tall As Lions- You Can't Take It With You

This is the new cover for As Tall As Lion's upcoming album You Can't Take It With You out August 18th. When I heard the news, I could hardly contain myself.

I've been a longtime mesmerized fan since their self-titled sophmore album back in 2006. Unfortunately, the band never received much attention/support and like most unexposed jewels in the bluff, fell through the cracks. Since 2006, they've released one EP Into the Flood, which I still religiously listen to day and night.

This year, they've finally done it!! So far, their upcoming single "Circles" is available on myspace. This song is amazing, as will the album.

If you digg thick orchestra tunes sprinkled with light acoustic riffs and lyrics that can stirr the most notable poet's heart, As Tall As Lions is the band to listen to.

Check them out:

Florence and the Machine

If you haven't heard of Florence and the Machine you're in luck, this band is a must have for the summer collection.

Florence and the Machine is made up of the the beautiful Florence Welch and her machines (aka musicians streaming from Devonte Hynes of Lightspeed Champion, to Robert Ackroyd, Christopher Llyod Hayden, Isabella Summers, and Tom Monger) That's a lot of musicians shoved into a band, but don't see this as a handicap. In fact, Florence and her crews' collaboration is nothing less than musical heaven, with intricately lush sounds that leaves any listener breathless.

So far they only have an EP out "A Lot of Love A Lot of Blood", but their debut album "Lungs" is said to hit stores July 2009!!

If you cradle a blow up picture pillow of Bat for Lashes every night, Florence and the Machine is the band for you.

Miike Snow

Sorry folks, haven't posted in a while. I've been busy with this and that, which sprinkled with blasting sun rays, has made it virtually impossible to stay indoors.

But, meet Miike Snow folks. ( and yes, it's Miike, no typo intended) A good friend of mine introduced me to them, and let me tell you, it's absolutely addicting. If you're a fan of Animal Collective and wondering whatever will fill the gap in your heart after Merriweather Post Pavilion, your answer is Miiiiiiiiiike!

Miike Snow is a four man built Swedish band, that's relatively new in the music scene. So far they have their single out "Animal" and a self titled debut album released already, so check them out!

Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson

Looks like Pete Yorn and Miss Johansson is collaborating for a upcoming album....personally I don't know what to say about it except, do I smell disaster?

So far they have a single out "Relator" I haven't heard it yet, I'm still trying to calm down.

Run Toto Run

Run Toto Run is a British trio that's shooting to make it big. Currently, they're getting a lot of hype mixing Passion Pit's Sleepyhead (which by the way is utterly delightful).

But beyond it's remixes, Run Toto Run is definitely a band to watch for this year. If you're looking for soft electronic folk with delightful piano punches, Run Toto Run does not disappoint. So far they have their single Plastic Gold out and a EP.

Check them out, I haven't been able to get them out of my mind for weeks :)

Run Toto Run Covers Sleepyhead!

Hey folks this is too amazing to pass up. English band,Run Toto Run has covered Passion Pit's Sleepyhead!! Head-gal Rachel Kichenside is definitely taking Michael Angelakos a run for his money with lush violin instrumentals and utterly fantastic guitar work. Check it out!

New Mew Single!!!

Mew is set to release their ridiculously long titled album out this August. So far they've just dropped their newest single "Introducing Palace Players".

Take a listen HERE

New Mars Volta

Mars Volta has two new songs "Since We've Been Wrong"" and "Cotopaxi" off their upcoming album Octahedron which is said to hit stores June 23. I can't wait! I've been a long time addicted fan since the old school days of De-Loused In the Comatorium in 2003, and to say the least I'm still holding strong. Mars Volta is timeless.

God HelpThe Girl

God Help the Girl is the newest project of Belle & Sebastian front man Stuart Murdoch. At first listen the whole project is imprinted with Murdoch's usual musical characteristics: pretty guitar riffs, descriptive lyrics, bright melodic vocals, touched with a sprinkle of everything sweet.

So far, God Help the Girl has a new single "Come Monday Night" out along with a music video.

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs Video

This is the newest video for Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heads Will Roll". I've literally watched this video 4 times straight, and I can't get enough! It's fucking fabulous! If you like werewolf dancing Michael Jackson impersonators with a touch of cheesy gore, this is for you!!

Enjoy :)

Wolfmother Comeback!!

If you're anything like me, you're slightly obsessed with organizing/grouping music. The other day, while maliciously clicking through Itunes, I stumbled upon Wolfmother. As I sat reminiscing the colossal collision of dark psychedelic madness and pure rock, it got me thinking. Whatever happened to our Australian friends?

Since their 2005 self titled debut album, they've steadily gained critical acclaim. However, just as their popularity built, Wolfmother disappeared. During the 2008s red hot rumors flew with internal band conflicts. The group was said to dissolve. It looked as if all was lost.

But lo-and behold, THEY'RE BACK!!! They're currently working on their newest album Cosmic Egg which should hit shelves sometime this closing year. So far, their hit single "Back Round" is infused with strong guitar jams, waaailing waaamys, YES YES YES. It does not disappoint.

Dark Night of the Soul

There's a new buzzzz hitting the musical world. It looks like the infamous Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous is ganging up to make a new album called Dark Night of the Soul.

Wow right?

To add the cherry to the sundae, director David Lynch will package a book of photos alongside the project. So far the album is the clearest definition of collaboration. In addition to their songs, well known artists such as James Mercer of the Shins, the Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixes, Iggy Pop, Nina Perssons of the Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Gerbils also appear on the album.

Before you run to the nearest record store and pre-order the album, there is tragic news. Due to legal issues with their running label EMI, the cd will not be released. However, don't weep, there are certain sites such as NPR that's streaming the whole album online.

FUN???

For all you Format, Anathallo, and Steel Train groupies, I have a treat for your ears.

Meet the band Fun, which is Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, and Jack Antonoff aka former bandies of (see above). Formed during 2008, this newbie band definitely lives up to their name with their excessively hyper/chipper music that reminds me of re-ampled Queen in modern 2009. With catchy melodic riffs stomach punched with pop-like rock, Fun is worth a listen to.

So far they have a new single "At Least I'm Not As Sad As I Use To Be" in preparation for their new debut album that's set to release sometime this year. Meanwhile, if you want to catch a real glimpse/listen of Fun, they're touring with Manchester Orchestra across the U.S.A.

New Mew!!

Yes, I said it. Mew is set to release a new album, which since their latest And Their Glass Handed Kites in 2005, is much overdue. As a dedicated Mew lover, I can hardly contain myself.

Interesting fact, the new album title is...

No more stories / Are told today / I’m sorry / They washed away /
No more stories / The world is grey / I’m tired / Let’s wash away /

Yes, I kid you not. It's quite the mouthful, however I'm hardly surprised. When has Mew ever been predictable? Nevertheless, No More Stories...will plummet stores August 25th and with a sidekick EP coming first early July 25th. The EP will include 2 tracks and 3 b-sides. Until then, we'll have to wait patiently.

If you don't know who Mew is, please be enlightened HERE.

Amazing Baby

Meet Amazing Baby, a band from Brooklyn. Though they're a relatively new band, Amazing Baby is gaining rapid attention, especially from glammy MGMT lovers. Now this isn't a coincidence. Amazing Baby's psychadelic vibes mixed with echoy electro rock stirs up MGMT comparison. However, I daresay this band is a MGMT conformist. Amazing Baby is very bit as unique and rebellious as their counterpart.

So far Amazing Baby has their EP Infinite Fucking Cross, and debut album Rewild out now!!!

Telekinesis

Today, I had the pleasuring of witnessing Telekinesis's free show at the UW lawn. Let me tell you, I'm blown away!! Despite the dreary weather of plummeting cats and dogs, I was hypnotized. Wet, uncomfortable, cold, but absolutely addicted.

Telekinesis is a local Seattle band best represented as dreamy electropop. With Micheal Lerner (aka Mr. nuts and bolts of the project) matching his soft vocals with sunny acoustic riffs and beats, it's impossible not to fall in love.

So far Telekinesis is relatively hush hush, but they're gaining fame. They have a self titled album out, which according to the music community, is all the rave. Keep your eyes open, Telekinesis is definitely an up and coming band to watch.

New Shins!!!

Yes, I've said it right, the Shins preformed two new songs "Double Bubble" and "Rifle Spiral" in California a few days ago. This marks the newest material since their last heart jerking Wincing the Night Away album in 2007. Therefore, do we predict a new album out?? I hope so! Until then, take a listen.

"Double Bubble" HERE!

"Rifle Spiral" HERE!

Mr. Hudson & The Library

Kanye lovers, remember the song Paranoid? Remember a muffled metallic voice singing "anyway, they don't know you like I do...." off and on in the song?

That folks is Mr. Hudson.

Surprisingly, solo Mr. Hudson is in a band called Hudson and the Library based in London. Now don't get confused, Mr. Hudson is not a rap star. Let's repeat, Mr. Hudson is not a rap star. In fact, Mr. Hudson's Library band is best described as alternative rock lathered with classical piano and crooning back up vocals. However, what's most captivating is Mr. Hudson's raspy voice exposing sappy love ballads of heartache and discovery. Simply, Mr. Hudson and his boys are good. Damn good.

So far they produced a debut album A Tale of Two Cities in 2007. While they received hearty applauds in Europe, popularity never hit home in North America. This year they're releasing their sophomore album "Straight No Closer" this May 13th. The album's single Supernova is on their myspace RIGHT NOW!

St. Vincent

Meet St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark from Brooklyn, NY. Since her debut album Marry Me in 2007, St. Vincent has gained critical acclaim with her dreary melodies and euphoric voice. This year, she's done it again with her newest album The Actor.

At first look, Annie Clark definitely makes you do a double take. With a head full of lopsided curls, she sends her audience into the 1950's era of elegant crooners and romanticism. This beauty transgresses into her ballads mixed with hints of modern synthesizing and electronic instrumentation. Overall, what one gets are thickly intricate melodies which matched with Clark's effortless rustic voice, can make even the toughest grinch swoon.

So far, her newest single "The Strangers" is absolutely breathtaking. I can tell this new album will not disappoint.

Check her out:

Swimming With Dolphins

Fans of Owl City, I have new music for your ears. Head pancho Adam Young has a side project, Swimming Dolphins with long time friend Austin Tofle.

Swimming Dolphins is a electropop band formed in Seattle during 2008. If you have Adam Young's name tattooed on your chest, have more than 50 various side pictures of him on Flickr, or is simply a hardcore groupie, you won't be disappointed. Though Swimming Dolphins is more melodically driven than Owl City, this band is irresistibly catchy. You simply cannot deny Adam Young's musical ingeniousness.

So far, Swimming Dolphins has their first EP out called Ambient Blue.

Grizzly Bears

If you're a kid that fancies four cutsie boys poking at their recorders and laptops singing dreamy/emotionally surged vocal harmonies, then Grizzly Bears may be your new best friend.

Grizzly Bears is a Brooklyn based experimental/indie band that's wowed the music world since 2004 with their debut album Horn of Plenty. Since then, they've produced 1 cd, 1 ep, and 1 collaboration cd with Dntel, Final Fantasy, Solex, amongst famous others.

This May 26th, they're set to release their third full length album Veckatimest (which, due to popular demand and our raging technological era, has leaked like rapidfire around the net). Nevertheless, the Grizzly's intricately layered melodies mixed with smooth folkish elements makes their cd a definate must buy.

The Morning After Girls

The Morning After Girls is a psychedelic rock band from Australia. Though they formed around 2003, 2005 was their music surge with 2 self titled EPs and debut album "Shadow's Evolve" in Europe. At that same year, not to neglect North America's screaming fans, the Girls also released 2 EPs and one cd titled "The Morning After Girls: Preluded eps 1 & 2"

Now fast forward to 2009, are we predicting another good year for the Girls? I think so. For all you long awaited fans, they're back with a forth coming album. Though details are still aloof, the Girls have soothed our impatience with their first single "The General Public". However, that's not all folks. They're also releasing a maxi-single which includes two B-sides and a special remix by Stealth on April 21st on Itunes. Clever clever, we'll just shut our mouths and gnaw on this for the time being.

Lilly Wood and the Prick

Lilly Wood and the Prick is a French duo that's slowly climbing up the music charts after turning heads turn with their cover of Santogold's L.E.S Artistes. With purely captivating vocals dashed with electro pop meets folkish rock, it's no wonder they're the new gossip in town.

They have their new EP called Lilly Who and the What? (pretty clever if you ask me), with six tracks including the Santogold cover. Their hit single is "Down the Drain", which I've listened to relentlessly. Absolutely relentlessly. They're still underneath the radar, but I doubt for long. With such addicting tunes stardom is a pinch away.

Pet Lions

Weather beating you down? Significant other kicked your ass to the curb? Do you just need a hug from something warm and fuzzy? Well, I have just the solution. Meet our dear friends, Pet Lions.

Pet Lions is a small band from Chicago that came together during late 2007. It's near effortless not to fall in love with their bouncy percussions, smooth guitar riffs, and undeniably catchy beats. Trust me. If you're feeling down in the dumps, they'll scoop you up and kick that flair back in ya!

So far, they have an EP called Soft Right OUT NOW!! You can download it via their website at www.digstation.com or iTunes. You can also listen to their whole EP on myspace.

Imogen Heap's Second Album

Imogen Heap has done it!

Her third highly anticipated album Eclipse is set to release August 2009. While she's been struggling off and on since 2007 to produce the album, Eclipse marks the first of Imogen since her last Speak For Yourself in 2005. Wow, four years of with no Imogen. That's four years too long.

There are 12 tracks on the album, one song "Not Now, But Soon" has already leaked and played on the TV show Heroes. However, Imogen stated that "Canvas" is going to be the official single and video. Here is a little snippet of the song.

So far, Imogen has flown around inviting small groups of listeners to a "pre-album listening party". This means soon boys and girls, sooooon! I can feel it in my bones.

Gossip

Gossip, yesssss they're back!!!

If you don't know already know, Gossip is rocking with a new album Music For Men this upcoming June 22nd. Finally after three long years, our prayers have been heard.

For all you newbies, Gossip is a three man band started in Olympia, WA. Beth Ditto (leading vocalist), Brace Paine (guitarist), and Kathy Mendonca (drummer) came together in 1999 breaking the music scene with their controversial lyrics and fierce rock strums. Since, they've produced three LPs and four EPs to date.

Stemming their influences from Sleater-Kinney, the Smiths to Misfits, you can already guess their tunes are short, ruthless, and every inch rebellious.

So far their new song "Heavy Cross" is out. If your worst fear is listening to a favorite band gone bad, no worries. Listen and rejoice, Gossip will never go down without a fight.

General Elektriks

What happens when you blend some lite soul with digital beats? You have the oh-so-smooooth jams of General Elektriks.

General Elektriks (and no we're not talking General Electrics the company) is the creation of musical prodigy Hervé Salters or as Hervé likes to call himself, RV.

Now, I'm not calling RV a musical GOD simply because I'm hopelessly addicted to his new album Good City For Dreamers, or that his damn catchy tunes are haunting every waking minute of my life. No. This man is by no less a pure genius.

By the age of 14 lil' RV terrorized the music scene with his mad keyboarding/synthesizing skills around London and Paris. Six years later, he discovered the love of old skool keyboards which sewn with electronic melodies, is indescribably General Elektriks.

So far General Elektriks has 2 albums out, the newest Good City For Dreamers dropped mid 2008. Good City For Dreamers is best described as the perfect blend of electro jazzzz, Jon Brion meets Jamiroquai, hip hop, and indie. That's a mouthful, I know.

Check it out!

Discovery

Ra Ra Riot

Vampire Weekend

Interesting, interesting. Looks like our favorite musicians Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot has teamed up to create Discovery.

When I found out, I literally had a mini seiz. Com'on two of our all favorite bands squished together into a small space producing music? Sounds like instantaneous love.

Currently they only have two tracks up on their Myspace, "Osaka Loop Line" and "Orange Shirt"
. Undeniably, my favorite is "Osaka Loop Line" with it's spacey vibe, trickly beats, and it's constant fast again/slow again tempo. However, let's not get neglectful. "Orange Shirt" isn't shabby either. Again, we're hit with these catchy electronic beats punched with Wes's melting vocals.

So far there's limited info about the upcoming EP. But don't be discouraged kids, you can't help but feel it soon with a big "COMING HARD AT YOU IN 2009!"

Dead Man's Bones

Waaait, hold up. Is that Ryan Gosling?? Yes, yes it is.

For all you avid Gosling fans (and I do not blame you), Ryan has done it again. This time it's not the local cinema screens he's oozing you with, but his mesmerizing voice.

Ryan Gosling has burst through the indie music scene with his band Dead Man's Bones. I for one was flabbergasted, I didn't know Gosling could 1) sing 2) think of starting a band 3) get even more incredible.

Dead Man's Bones is a charming two man band composed of Gosling and his friend Zack Shields. Currently they've produced two songs, "In The Room Where You Sleep" and "Name In Stone" under Werewolf Heart Records. Each song has a debut video, which will leave you confused and utterly terror-stricken.

The biggest question remains. Are we predicting another actor-turned-musician gone bad? Fear not my friends, Dead Man's Bones can best be described as folkishly dark, haunting, with lush gothic undertones. In short, it is nothing less than captivating.

It is rumored their highly anticipated LP comes out late summer. I simply can't wait. Till then, check them out.

Passion Pit

Unless you've missed it kids, there's a hot new electronic/glitchy/synthesizing/pop group sweeping through the music world. I present you, Passion Pit.

This American electro band is Michael Angelakos (lead vocals/keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth/samples, Jeff Apruzzese (bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums). Formed off and on in late 2006/07, these six well to do kids enjoyed music too much for their own good, which sprinkled with extra time is wha-la, instant success.

Passion Pit are set to release their eagerly anticipated debut album 'Manners' May 19, which understood in the music world, will be leaking to a net near you. So keep your eyes/ears open.

Until then, you can listen relentlessly to their EP Chunk of Change, which has had my head swirling in ecstasy for the past week.
